About DWTS - Dothan Style

It’s one of the biggest shows on television right now!  Celebrities partner with professional dancers and place themselves in the national spotlight for a chance to win the coveted “Disco Ball Trophy”!  Yes, it’s “Dancing with the Stars,” and now, Dothan has its own version. The Dothan-Houston County Substance Abuse Partnership (DHCSAP) is celebrating its own version of Dancing with the Stars– Dothan Style! This unique and spectacular event has become the premiere fundraiser for the DHCSAP.

How it Works -- We invite local celebrities from all walks of life (e.g., business, government, media) to partner with local “professional” dancers who will teach them one ballroom dance (e.g., tango, rhumba, samba, waltz, foxtrot, quickstep).  Their dance selection is performed in front of a live audience in the Dothan Civic Center, which has been magically transformed into a magnificent ballroom. These dance partners will be judged by a panel of three professional judges and by votes cast through donations. “Donation” votes come in the form of dollars paid by the audience and dancers’ families or friends, one vote per dollar donation.  We also ask each dance team to raise money on its own by approaching friends, neighbors or business associates to donate money to the team in exchange for those coveted votes.

What Is Asked of Celebrities -- Celebrities are asked to help promote the event in their businesses and circles of friends and family, and to help DHCSAP with mass marketing and promotion by having their photo taken and participating in advance publicity in print media, TV and radio commercials. Celebrities are asked to take the competition seriously, but light-heartedly, by practicing with their professional partner routinely in order to present the best show possible to the public and are asked to help raise funds by encouraging family, friends, co-workers and business associates to “vote” for their team in advance or through sponsorships.

What is asked of Professional Dancers -- The professional dancers are asked to support their celebrity partner by providing instruction and encouragement during the duration of the preparation and the night of the event.  Also, professionals are asked to help in the fund-raising process by encouraging others to vote for their team. Finally, professionals are also asked to help with advance publicity for the event and, like their partners, to take the competition seriously, but light-heartedly at the same time.

Fundraising -- Fundraising comes not only in the aforementioned one vote per dollar donation, but also in the form of sponsorships for the evening.  Sponsorships range from $1,500 for Spotlight Level to $100 for Quickstep Level.  All tax deductible donations benefit the Dothan-Houston County Substance Abuse Partnership, which uses these funds to provide education and awareness about substance (drug, alcohol, tobacco) abuse, bullying education, and information about other destructive decisions.

Currently, the DHCSAP provides LifeSkills education to students throughout Houston County, as well as court-ordered educational intervention and juvenile probation officer programs.  DHCSAP also is a sponsor of the annual Red Ribbon Campaign throughout area schools each October;, "Family Night Out" with the Dothan Police Department; Family Day, which encouraging families to sit down, eat a meal together and take time to talk; and many other events throughout the year which benefit and educate the public – especially youngsters – about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and bullying and destructive decisions.
